SAS FACILITY, AKROTIRI CYPRUS

It was just after nine pm in a hangar-like facility in Akrotiri Cyprus. The new Team Argos had spent the better part of the last twelve hours discussing potential ways for somebody to get their hands on a laptop computer owned by a Russian General while he was visiting Syria. After many pointless arguments they were sitting around the SAS planning room with beers in their hands, having surrendered to the general feeling that it just wasn’t going to happen.

Gardner was still sitting at a computer, beer on the desk, looking at maps and wondering what she was missing, when an email from the JCTF planning cell popped up in her inbox. She clicked it opened, read it and laughed. “I think it is time for another beer. I am going to forward you guys the latest idea from the team.”

There were a few minutes of silence as they all read the email, with a few team members looking over the shoulders of the members who had computers.”

“Holy shit, that’s insane. Are they actually trying to get Harrington killed?” said Mark Laghari

“It will never work,” said Yolande Langham with a tone of total irritation. “It is one thing to wear an adversary’s uniform for a quick exposure in the field, trying to live among them for a day or more is just stupid.”

“I agree with the angry lady,” said Kahlil Rashed. “There is a ton of risk here and not much reward. Honestly, I don’t see the Ukrainians accepting the challenge anyway.”

“Well, the good news is that it would keep us from doing a frontal assault on a heavily defended airbase,” said Randy. “However, it certainly puts five guys in a really tough position. I thought this was supposed to be low risk kind of stuff?”

“Which also brings up a good question,” said Mark Laghari. “What the hell are we going to do if the Ukrainians say ‘no?’”

There was silence for a moment. “Honestly, I am not sure,” said Sarah Gardner. “I get the feeling that the team at the JCTF is betting everything on the fact that they say yes.”

Banner Ross was on his third beer and had been quiet for a while. He took a swig off his beer and said, “Fuck it. I’ll bet you twenty Euros that the Ukrainian guys go for it. Don’t forget that they are at war with the Russians right now. I bet they will do it just so they can tell an epic story of how they fucking fooled the FSB.”

Lucien Brown spoke up, “I’ll double the bet. I worked with some of their Spetsnaz Detachment Alpha guys on a ‘thing’ I did a couple years ago in Crimea. They were pretty tough.” He paused, “Their problem is going to be counter-intelligence. Half of them worked with the Russians, back when they were all friends. It won’t take much for word to get out and screw this all up.”

“I think that might be an advantage in this case,” said Gardner.
